Matthew J. Lloyd is a PhD student on the Fusion CDT, supervised by Dr David Armstrong, Professor Michael Moody and Dr Paul Bagot, from the University of Oxford and Dr Duc Nguyen-Manh of the Culham Centre for Fusion Energy. The realisation of Fusion Energy is dependent on the development of materials that can survive the extreme conditions present at the first wall of the reactor. This project aims to investigate how the properties and microstrcture of Tungsten first wall components will change under neutron irradiation. Atom Probe Tomography will be used to observe nano-scale precipitation in high temperature ion irradiated W-Re-Os-Ta alloys, designed to represent the predicted change in composition of the first wall components over time.
