James is the National Nuclear User Facility (NNUF) Atom Probe Scientist, whose main role is to facilitate and support access to the newly installed NNUF Active Atom Probe for users within the NNUF network and beyond. This consists of carrying out external projects of (and training new users in atom probe operation for active materials, targeted sample preparation using Focussed Ion Beam (FIB) techniques and optimised data analysis for quantifying irradiation related changes in microstructure such as nanoscale solute clustering.
His research interests include:
- Advanced sample preparation FIB techniques using complementary techniques such as Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD), Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS) and Transmission Kikuchi Diffraction (TKD) for site specific atom probe analysis.
- Radiation damage in nuclear structural materials, including neutron, proton and heavy ion irradiated systems.
- Low concentration dopant and impurity mapping in semiconductor systems.
- Applications of atom probe to geological materials, especially those related to isotopic analysis.
