Zhao is working on obtaining mechanistic understanding of stress corrosion cracking (SCC) of austenitic alloys in pressurized water reactor (PWR) primary water through high-resolution characterization. The techniques that Zhao is mainly working with are focused ion beam (FIB), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), transmission Kikuchi diffraction (TKD), electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD), electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), and atom probe tomography (APT). The combination of TEM/TKD and APT in studying the SCC crack tips can push the understanding of SCC mechanisms to a new level.
