Anne is carrying out a DPhil project as part of the Mechanistic Understanding of Zirconium Corrosion MUZIC-3 programme. The MUZIC-3 programme is an international consortium between numerous industry stakeholders and academic institutions. This is the third of its kind and previous work has focused on understanding the oxide layer formation and hydrogen pick up mechanisms in zirconium alloys used in nuclear applications. The project will use Atom Probe Tomography to form a systematic analysis of the bulk chemistry for a set of ex-reactor samples. This project aims to understand the chemistry ahead of the oxide front and investigate whether this may be related to the oxide formation in reactor conditions. Samples to be analysed are ex-reactor neutron irradiated zirconium alloys containing Nb, which are provided by Westinghouse.
